What are the current regulations?

All gas appliances located in rental properties and owner occupied homes should be serviced every 12-24 months to maintain efficiency, safety and product warranty. Failure to maintain appliances may result in injury and may impact insurance claims.

Recent changes to the Victorian Residential Tenancies Act (2021) have enforced mandatory safety checks for rental properties. Rental properties are required by law to have a gas safety check every 2 years.

UPDATE: June 1st 2022- All gas safety checks and gas servicing/repair must be conducted by a registered Specialist Gas fitter with Type A specialist Class. Certificates provided by gas fitters/plumbers without this qualification DO NOT meet the VBA requirements and are now void.

To find out if your plumber has the qualification to provide a gas safety check please visit the VBA search portal. If the practitioner does not list “Type A appliance conversion & Type A appliance servicing work” qualification it is advised to contact VBA as your certificate is likely invalid.
